MH-60R 'Romeo' Helicopter ★

The MH-60R 'Romeo' is a multi-role maritime helicopter manufactured by Lockheed Martin (Sikorsky) for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), search and rescue (SAR), and maritime surveillance.

India procured 24 MH-60R helicopters from the United States under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route to strengthen the Indian Navy's operational capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The helicopters are deployed from frontline warships, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, and frigates.

The MH-60R is equipped with:

• Dipping sonar and sonobuoys for submarine detection.
• Surface-search radar and electro-optical sensors for surveillance.
• Mk-54 lightweight torpedoes and AGM-114 Hellfire missiles for engaging underwater and surface threats.

Its induction significantly enhances India's maritime domain awareness and complements the Navy's strategy of safeguarding sea lanes and countering submarine activity. The platform also improves interoperability with friendly navies during joint exercises such as Malabar.
